Enjoying the Simple Life

Have life been hectic for you, a complete blur of events such that there never seems to be enough time for everything? Do you wish that you could clone yourself so as to be able to divide and split up your workload between two of yourself? Time to slow down and smell the roses!

It's been almost a month since my last post, so for those people who has been wondering what I've been up to, here's an update: absolutely NOTHING and proud of it!

Life has been good since I decided to declutter my life by giving a month's notice at work and relinquishing my responsibilities at the restaurant. After spending the last 3 years wearing two equally tough hats: as an employee and as an employer, I decided to call it quits at both and takes things slow for a while to reorganize my life and rethink future plans.

Before that, my typical week consisted of spending 5 days a week 9-10hrs in the office each day before having to rush down to close-up the shop on alternate week days. Saturdays are usually spent at the restaurant as well leaving only Sunday to recuperate before the next week starts, and little personal time to do anything else other than just to catch up on sleep.

In comparison, life has been so much simpler the past month. With the stress from running the business out of the way and serving a month's notice at work, it seems a whole new world has opened to me: time to enjoy slow leisurely meals, to read a good book, to watch DVDs, to do window shopping, to spend quality time with the girlfriend, family and friends! It is my rediscovery of happiness in small everyday things that I never had time to enjoy in quite a long while.

"Life is really simple, but we insist on making it complicated."
- Confucious

Sometimes we set ourselves too many big hairy audacious goals such that we are overwhelmed by them. Short of being able to achieve them, the chase for it depletes our energy and resources so much such that we miss out on finding happiness in the simpler things in life. The key to finding peace in yourself is to think simple.
